Instrument Portrait Project
For the past several years, I have been creating portraits of vintage stringed instruments from the collection of George Gruhn, Gruhn Guitars in Nashville Tennessee. These paintings are attempts to capture the soul and character of each individual instrument in oil. Each piece starts with a detailed sketch created to scale, and then I carefully sew in the details using a fine hemp twine. This is then transferred to a hand crafted wood canvas and painted in oil.
My goal is to capture as many instruments as possible, culminating in a series that represents the modern history of hand crafted musical instruments. Some of these instruments are over one hundred years old, and the Gruhn collection contains a vast amount of vintage instruments that is ever changing and growing. Now numbering almost twenty, each visit to the shop brings a new passion for capturing the beauty of these instruments.
Capturing the soul
